Most Americans disapprove of Trump’s stewardship of the country, according to a new survey by The AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
Thirty-five percent of Americans approve of the job President Trump has been doing and 64 percent disapprove. This assessment is highly partisan, with three-quarters of Republicans expressing approval and 9 in 10 Democrats expressing disapproval. When it comes to the specific issues, nearly half approve of the way President Trump has handled the threat of terrorism. Fewer approve of the way he has handled the economy, immigration, and foreign policy.
The survey also reveals that few Americans believe that President Trump respects the democratic institutions and traditions of the United States. Thirty-four percent say Trump has a great deal or a fair amount of respect for this country’s institutions and traditions, while 65 percent say he has not too much or no respect at all. Again, there are major differences by party. Sixty-nine percent of Republicans say Trump has respect for America’s institutions and traditions, while 89 percent of Democrats say he does not.
Where Democrats and Republicans do tend to agree is on their disapproval of the way Congress is doing its job. Overall, 22 percent approve of the way Congress is handling its job and 75 percent disapprove. Majorities of both Democrats and Republicans view Congress in a negative light.
The nationwide poll was conducted June 8-11, 2017 using the AmeriSpeak® Panel, the probability-based panel of NORC at the University of Chicago. Online and telephone interviews using landlines and cell phones were conducted with 1,068 adults. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
