Biden approval slips

Views on President Biden’s job performance and the direction of the country are more pessimistic compared to last month.

March 23, 2023

Thirty-eight percent of the public approve of how Joe Biden is handling his job as president, down from the 45% who said the same last month, but about where it has stood over the past few months.

Views of how Biden is handling the national economy are more negative. Only 31% approve of his handling of the nation’s economy compared to 68% who disapprove.

Evaluations of the president’s approval overall and his approval on the economy remain strongly partisan. Seventy-six percent of Democrats approve of how he’s handling his job as president and 63% approve his handling of the economy. Republicans continue to disapprove of his job performance and his handling of the economy.

Views of the direction of the country are slightly more pessimistic than they were a month ago. Overall, 21% of the public say the country is headed in the right direction, compared to the 28% who said the same last month. Both Democrats and Republicans are less likely to say the country is headed in the right direction compared to February 2023.

The nationwide poll was conducted March 16-20, 2023 using the AmeriSpeak® Panel, the probability-based panel of NORC at the University of Chicago. Online and telephone interviews using landlines and cell phones were conducted with 1,081 adults. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.0 percentage points.
