Overall, about 4 in 10 adults are fearful about another four years with Donald Trump as president, while 3 in 10 feel the same about another four years with Joe Biden in the White House.  Only about a quarter of the public is excited or satisfied about either candidate’s reelection.

Republicans feel more positive about their party’s presumptive nominee than Democrats.  About half of Republicans would be excited and 59% would feel satisfied if Trump is reelected in November.  About half of Democrats would feel satisfied if Biden was elected, and only about 4 in 10 would be excited with another Biden administration.

The president’s job approval has been fairly steady over the past several months with about 4 in 10 adults approving of Biden’s performance.  Most Democrats continue to hold a positive opinion of Biden’s job performance. And most Republicans continue to hold a negative view.  In the latest survey, 38% of adults approve of how Biden is handling his job and 61% disapprove.

Only about 3 in 10 adults approve of how Biden is handling immigration, border security, or the conflict in the Middle East.  Roughly half of Democrats approve of how he is handling these issues, and the vast majority of Republicans disapprove.  Two-thirds of Democrats approve of his handling of the economy.

The nationwide poll was conducted March 21-25, 2024 using the AmeriSpeak® Panel, the probability-based panel of NORC at the University of Chicago. Online and telephone interviews using landlines and cell phones were conducted with 1,282 adults. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3.8 percentage points.
